SEATauBench: Adapting Tool-Agent-User Evaluation Into Low-Resource Southeast Asian Languages

While AI development and evaluation for Southeast Asia (SEA) has grown rapidly, agent capabilities in regional languages are still poorly understood despite its importance to sovereign AI. To fill this gap, we introduce SEATauBench, the first agent-focused evaluation framework for SEA sovereign AI. SeaTau adapts TauBench to five languages -- Mandarin, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, and Filipino -- and evaluates agents across progressively localized settings that vary the language of user-agent interaction, tool specifications, and task domains. Across three recent models, we find that English agent capabilities transfer reasonably well when only the conversation language changes, but quality and robustness degrade sharply as more task contexts are localized, with the largest losses in full domain adaptation. We also the limits of English-only agent assessment for measuring agent capabilities in SEA languages. More broadly, SeaTau provides a diagnostic benchmark and reusable adaptation pipeline for building reliable multilingual agents for linguistically diverse regions. Data and code can be accessed at github.com/SEACrowd/SEATauBench.

ARMOR: Adaptive Retriever Optimization for Low-Resource Telecom Question Answering

Heshan Fernando, Quan Xiao, Yan Xin, Tianyi Chen

Telecom question answering (QA) is a challenging setting for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): evidence is fragmented across standards, papers, encyclopedic resources, and web documents, and answers often hinge on technical tables, equations, and specialized protocol language…

Phonetic forced alignment for low-resource language varieties: Model training and evaluation on Chengdu Mandarin

Zhiheng Qian, Aini Li, Hai Hu, Liang Zhao

Phonetic forced alignment is a key technique in phonetic research, yet existing alignment systems lack specialized models for low-resource language varieties. We address this by training text-dependent and text-independent aligners for Chengdu Mandarin using a 17-hour corpus and…

Challenges and Recommendations for LLMs-as-a-Judge in Multilingual Settings and Low-Resource Languages

A. Seza Doğruöz, Xixian Liao, Verena Blaschke, Jakob Prange, Senyu Li, David Ifeoluwa Adelani

LLM-as-a-Judge has become the dominant evaluation paradigm for many natural language generation tasks, due to shortcomings of conventional metrics and high correlations with human judgment, albeit mostly in English. There are now attempts to extend LLM-as-a-Judge to multilingual…

When Does Knowledge Distillation Hurt? Reliability-Aware Distillation for Low-Resource Language Summarization

Knowledge distillation (KD) is a standard approach for compressing sequence-to-sequence models, but its per-sample effects are rarely examined. On the BanSum Bangla summarization benchmark, we find that standard KD improves ROUGE-L by only +0.0003 over a cross-entropy baseline, a…
