Smart Farm IoT System: A Distributed Versioned Architecture for IoT Data Ingestion, Validation, and Persistence in Precision Agriculture

Gustavo F. Paluch

This release presents v2.0.0 of the Smart Farm IoT System, a distributed, versioned architecture designed for reliable data ingestion, validation, and persistence in precision agriculture. The system addresses structural challenges in IoT deployments: device heterogeneity, inconsistent data contracts, lack of formal payload versioning, unvalidated ingestion, and low experimental reproducibility. The architecture comprises five layers (Edge, Communication, Ingestion, Persistence, Visualization) and employs JSON Schema for formal data contract validation, ensuring data integrity, backward compatibility, and traceability. The stack includes ESP32 microcontrollers, MQTT protocol,InfluxDB time-series database, and Grafana dashboards, orchestrated via Docker Compose for reproducibility. This version (v2.0.0) consolidates the research prototype and is the reference implementation for the accompanying article on IoT adoption challenges in Brazilian agriculture. Future releases will include real hardware validation, automation modules, irrigation control, and machine learning models.
