Understanding newspaper images remains a challenging task due to their complex, nested hierarchical structures and dense, heterogeneous layouts. In this paper, we explore two complementary approaches for newspaper structure understanding. First, we present a modular bottom-up pipeline that combines state-of-the-art open-source models: YOLO for layout detection, LayoutReader for reading order prediction, and a custom algorithm for article segmentation. This approach leverages existing robust components while maintaining flexibility and interpretability. Second, we introduce Tiramisu (Tiered Transformers for Hierarchical Structure Understanding), a novel end-to-end transformer-based architecture that explicitly models document hierarchy through an iterative tiered process. Tiramisu performs section and article separation, block localization, semantic categorization, and reading order prediction using highly parallelized attention mechanisms. Finally, we release Finlam La Liberté, a new dataset designed specifically for evaluating hierarchical information retrieval in historical newspapers. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of both approaches in reconstructing complex newspaper hierarchies, with comparative analysis highlighting their respective strengths for scalable document digitization. The Tiramisu training code, including the synthetic newspaper generator, is available at https://git.litislab.fr/tiramisu/tiramisu-newspaper-articles-extractor.

Multimodal Assessment of Pancreatic Cancer Resectability Using Deep Learning

Vincent Ochs, Christoph Kuemmerli, Florentin Bieder, Julia Wolleb, Joel L. Lavanchy, Julia Ruppel, et al.

Accurate determination of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) resectability relies on evaluating how the tumor interacts with major peripancreatic vessels on CT imaging, yet expert assessment often shows substantial variability. We introduce a fully automated multimodal deep…

Do All Visual Tokens Matter Equally? Object-Evidence Preserving Token Merging for Vision-Language Retrieval

Suhyeong Park, Junha Jung, Jungwoo Park, Jaewoo Kang

Multi-vector vision-language retrieval preserves fine-grained visual evidence through maximum-similarity late interaction, but dense image-side tokens make storage and scoring expensive. Existing token compression methods reduce this cost, yet they can remove or collapse object-…

Memory-Conditioned Tool Calling for Camera-First Visual Agents

Xiaofan Wu, Xi Zeng, Miaoxia Chen, Peishan Chen, Shuyan Li, Jiyun Yao, et al.

Recognition tells an agent what is in an image; personal memory affects what is worth looking up next. In a camera-first setting the user can send only an image, so the agent must form the lookups. We study whether personal visual memory improves agent-side tool choice and tool a…

Learning to Compose: Revisiting Proxy Task Design for Zero-Shot Composed Image Retrieval

Jingjing Zhang, Lei Zhang, Zheren Fu, Zhendong Mao

Composed Image Retrieval (CIR) retrieves a target image from a reference image and a textual modification. While supervised CIR relies on costly triplets, Zero-Shot CIR (ZS-CIR) alleviates this reliance through proxy tasks trained on image-text pairs. However, existing proxy task…

MolSight: A Graph-Aware Vision-Language Model for Unified Chemical Image Understanding

Wenda Wang, Yihan Tong, Yuwei Hu, Zhewei Wei

Using molecular large language models (LLMs) as a unified framework for understanding molecular structures and functions is emerging as a new trend in tasks such as molecular design and drug discovery. However, these models struggle to fully capture the visual representation of m…
