PPL-Factory: Task-Aware and Budget-Aware Data Selection from Language Modeling to Reasoning

Hang Zhang, Warren J. Gross

Not all training samples contribute equally to large language model fine-tuning. Selecting informative training samples can reduce the computational cost while preserving downstream performance. Many existing data selection methods rely on indirect heuristics, such as data quality, diversity or reasoning trace length. However, the effectiveness of these fixed criteria is task-dependent and difficult to generalize across diverse downstream tasks. Perplexity-based data selection provides a simple and model-aware solution to estimate the sample difficulty, but existing approaches typically score the entire training sequence and ignore the difference in learning objectives of language modeling and reasoning tasks. In this paper, we propose PPL-Factory, a simple and interpretable data selection framework that combines task-aware perplexity-based scores and data budget-aware selection criteria. Experiments on GSM8K demonstrate that PPL-Factory outperforms other state-of-the-art data selection methods using only $1\%$ of the training set. With $10\%$ of the data, PPL-Factory exceeds full-data fine-tuning accuracy by 0.9 on GSM8K and 4.8 on MATH. Overall, our results demonstrate that task-aware and budget-aware perplexity-based selection provides an effective and applicable approach for efficient fine-tuning.

Dysphagia Risk Stratification in Head and Neck Cancer via Two-Stage PRO-Clinical Stacking

Siyuan Zhao, Eric Ababio Anyimadu, Zachary G. Brumm, Yue Ma, Clifton David Fuller, Xinhua Zhang, et al.

Dysphagia is a debilitating late effect of head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment, yet timely identification of at-risk patients remains challenging in survivorship care. Definitive assessment relies on videofluoroscopic imaging, as captured by the Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowi…

Towards Reducing Foreign Language Anxiety Using Level-Appropriate Embodied Conversational Agents

Krishan Rajaratnam, Wenbin Gan, Yuan Sun

Foreign language anxiety (FLA) can be a major barrier to second language acquisition (SLA), especially in conversational contexts. With the proliferation of large language models (LLMs) throughout all areas of life, recent work suggests that interacting with LLM agents can be ins…

Quantum Spectral Model: Data Reuploading with Input-Conditioned Frequency Support

Peiyong Wang, Udaya Parampalli, Casey R. Myers

A central design principle in modern machine learning and artificial intelligence is to align a model's inductive bias with the structure of its input data. For matrix-valued inputs, relevant matrix-level relationships can be characterised through spectral values and spectral sub…

Opaque Epistemic Mediation: How LLM Deployment Configurations Shape the Validation of Pseudo-Science

Davide Scarso, Hugo Noronha de Almeida, Joaquim Pina

Commercial large language models are increasingly used as knowledge references, yet their stance on contested scientific claims is neither stable nor transparent. We tested how four major LLM families (Claude, Grok, GPT, Gemini) evaluate ethnonationalist pseudo-science derived fr…
