Secure Decentralized Time Synchronization in Open Swarms: A Comparison of Intel SGX with BFT Consensus and the Ephemeral Integrity Substrate - EmMa

Annonymous

Intel SGX vs. Ephemeral Integrity Substrate We compare two approaches to achieving provably secure, decentralized time synchronization in networks of ephemerally identified nodes, such as open swarms. The first combines Intel SGX enclaves with Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus, while the second is the recently published Ephemeral Integrity Substrate, which relies on Physical Unclonable Functions and a deterministic trace‑based handover. We analyze threat models, Sybil resistance, consensus mechanisms, network architecture, time synchronization strategies, and overall security guarantees. The comparison highlights fundamental differences in trust anchors, identity management, and resilience, providing guidance for system designers in adversarial environments. Decentralized time synchronization is critical for coordinating actions in networks without centralized infrastructure, such as drone swarms, autonomous vehicles, and permissionless mesh networks. In open settings, nodes join and leave freely, and identities can be generated at will, making Sybil attacks a primary concern. Ensuring a consistent global clock despite faulty or malicious nodes requires a robust security architecture.
