Cognitive Cyborgification: A Bloom-Based Framework for Measuring the Externalization of Human Cognition to AI
The externalization of cognitive abilities to tools is not new. Writing externalized memory; calculators externalized computation; search engines externalized knowledge retrieval. Each generation lost the skills its predecessors possessed, naturalized its tools, and claimed authorship over tool-mediated outputs. This paper uses Anderson and Krathwohl's (2001) revision of Bloom's cognitive taxonomy — Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate, and Create — as a measurement axis to map the historical progression of externalization and to locate the specific contribution of generative AI. I argue that layers 1 through 3 were externalized gradually over decades to centuries, constituting a gentle slope that humans could, in principle, retrace. Generative AI externalizes layers 4 through 6 simultaneously and within years, constituting a steep descent. The critical finding is not that AI creates a qualitative discontinuity but that the prior completion of layers 1–3 eliminates structural resistance to the externalization of layers 4–6. The continuity itself is the mechanism of irreversibility. I introduce a three-stage framework: cognitive cyborgification (partial externalization, layers 1–3), full-body cognitive cyborgification (comprehensive externalization, layers 1–5), and cyberbrain transition (externalization of the creative layer, layer 6). When a user's cognitive engagement is reduced to the act of pressing the execute button, the question is no longer whether a particular skill has been lost but whether the agent remains a cognitive agent at all.
