The Features of Democracy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Its Merits and Challenges – A Study

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming political systems, governance structures, and democratic participation across the globe. Democracy, traditionally grounded in citizen participation, representation, accountability, and transparency, now faces profound changes due to AI-driven technologies such as machine learning, big data analytics, automated decision-making, and algorithmic governance. This study explores the evolving features of democracy in the age of artificial intelligence, examining both its merits and challenges. On one hand, AI enhances democratic processes through improved public service delivery, data-driven policymaking, increased administrative efficiency, and broader civic engagement via digital platforms. Governments can use AI to analyse public opinion, optimize resource allocation, and detect corruption, thereby strengthening democratic institutions. On the other hand, AI poses significant risks, including algorithmic bias, surveillance overreach, misinformation campaigns, digital inequality, and erosion of privacy. The use of AI in political campaigns, targeted advertising, and automated content generation may manipulate voter behaviour and distort public discourse. Furthermore, concentration of AI power within private corporations raises concerns about transparency and accountability. This study adopts a qualitative analytical approach to evaluate how democratic values such as equality, freedom, rule of law, and participation are reshaped in an AI-mediated society. It argues that while AI offers substantial opportunities to strengthen democratic governance, it simultaneously demands robust regulatory frameworks, ethical guidelines, and civic awareness to prevent democratic backsliding. The future of democracy depends not merely on technological advancement but on the capacity of societies to align AI innovation with democratic principles.
