Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are a class of diverse hardware modalities, associated software, and connected devices which are widely used in a variety of fields, including neurosurgery, biomedical data analysis, and neuroimaging. Recent years have seen rapid advancements in BCI technology, and neurotechnology more broadly, with the first devices now passing clinical trials, early examples of consumer hardware entering the market, and many variants of consumer and medical hardware with increasingly extensive capabilities being developed rapidly. However, research and development in security for BCIs--known as neurosecurity--lags significantly behind the capabilities of BCIs themselves. In an effort to address as many vulnerabilities as feasible immediately, in this paper we review the current state of the art in neurosecurity, thoroughly survey the breadth and complexity of both firmly established and highly probable security threats to BCI systems, and provide recommendations of existing methods from cybersecurity, hardware security, and machine learning which can immediately be applied to address some of these gaps in neurosecurity.
Clinical biomarker workflows in translational research settings often rely on spreadsheet-driven tracking, manual quality control (QC) reconciliation, and loosely integrated systems, resulting in limited state visibility, delayed reporting, and increased operational risk. These c…
Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for a range of software, hardware and human-centered security tasks. Consequently, LLM performance on security tasks is an active area of measurement and research, often with a focus on identifying areas in which LLM security ``k…
Inference-time safety methods for large language models have proliferated, yet no systematic comparison exists. We evaluate five defense paradigms (no defense, static steering, CAST, AlphaSteer, probe-gated) across seven instruction-tuned models (7-31B) and five attack types (GCG…
The human body is at the center of a growing family of technologies designed to tightly and persistently couple biological and digital systems. Robotic prostheses are a representative example of this tight coupling. Also referred to as bionic limbs, robotic prostheses are devices…
Privacy is an important challenge when users interact with AI chatbots, since users may share sensitive information, explicitly or implicitly, and AI chatbots can use this information for user profiling. In this paper, we aim to protect user privacy via a user-side mechanism that…
Significant advancement of immersive technologies such as Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) and their integration into diverse aspects of modern life need authentication interfaces that are secure, intuitive, and compatible with embodied interaction. Traditional methods such…
