BEST-RQ-2: Contextualize-Then-Predict, a Two-Step Approach for Self-Supervised Audio Representations

Ludovic K. Tuncay, Etienne Labbé, Thomas Pellegrini

Self-supervised learning enables audio representations that transfer across domains and tasks. We present BEST-RQ-2, an evolution of BEST-RQ that retains frozen randomprojection-based discrete targets while introducing a two-step contextualize-then-predict pretraining scheme. A ViT context encoder processes only the unmasked spectrogram regions, and a lightweight predictor infers targets for the masked regions; the predictor is discarded after pretraining. Replacing the original Conformer encoder with a ViT shifts performance across domains, slightly reducing speech performance while improving music and environmental sounds, with comparable average scores. The main improvement comes from decomposing masked prediction into separate contextualization and prediction stages. On the X-ARES and XARES-LLM benchmarks, BEST-RQ-2 consistently outperforms one-stage baselines in overall transfer while keeping inference compute unchanged. Code and model checkpoints are publicly available.

Phone Segmentation and Recognition through Phonological Activation Mapping

Shikhar Bharadwaj, Kwanghee Choi, Stephen McIntosh, Chin-Jou Li, Eunjung Yeo, Daisuke Saito, et al.

Phone segmentation and recognition are inherently related tasks, yet modern approaches typically model them separately. We argue that phonetic structure is already latent in the representations of self-supervised speech models (S3Ms), and one only needs to steer them to solve bot…

The Sound of Absence: Audio-Language Embedding Models Struggle with Negation

Chun-Yi Kuan, Hung-yi Lee

Audio-language embedding models such as CLAP are widely evaluated on matching present sound events, but rarely on negation. We show this affirmation-only evaluation hides a key limitation: these models fail to encode negated sound concepts, mapping affirmative and negated caption…

Unified Audio Intelligence Without Regressing on Text Intelligence

Zhifeng Kong, Sang-gil Lee, Jaehyeon Kim, Boxin Wang, Zihan Liu, Sungwon Kim, et al.

Audio intelligence involves understanding, reasoning about, and generating both audio and speech. In this work, we introduce Nemotron-Labs-Audex-30B-A3B (Audex), a unified audio-text LLM built on Nemotron-Cascade-2-30B-A3B, a strong text-only MoE LLM. Audex adopts a simple unifie…

A Production-Oriented Framework for Evaluation of SFX Generation

Mélodie Desbos, Yara Bahram, Eric Granger, Mohammadhadi Shateri

Industrial sound design requires audio generation systems that not only produce realistic audio, but also preserve the perceptual identity of a reference, support controllable variation, and remain efficient for practical workflows. Existing evaluations are usually tied to text-t…

ReGen: Hierarchical Multi-Prompt Representation Generation for Efficient Waveform Diffusion Models

Sang-Hoon Lee, Ha-Yeong Choi

Representation alignment (REPA) has been investigated to accelerate diffusion training, but we observe that regularizing intermediate representations in diffusion Transformers (DiT) may implicitly entangle latents and limit generative capacity. To address this issue, we propose R…

Improving Text-to-Audio Instruction Following via Fine-Grained Feedback from Audio-Aware Large Language Models

Chun-Yi Kuan, Siwon Kim, Byeonggeun Kim, Suyoun Kim, Bo-Ru Lu, Qinming Tang, et al.

Recent text-to-audio models generate high-quality audio, but often fail to follow instructions involving multiple sound events and temporal order. This gap arises because existing evaluation and training signals mainly emphasize global similarity or perceptual quality, with limit…
