High-Dimensional Procrustes Matching via Tree Counts

Xiaochun Niu, Tselil Schramm, Jiaming Xu

Suppose we observe two sets of $n$ Gaussian vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$, with the promise that, after applying a permutation of $[n]$ and a rotation of $\mathbb{R}^d$, the two sets are $ρ$-correlated. The Procrustes matching problem asks us to recover the unknown permutation of $[n]$ that aligns the two sets. The problem is well-studied in the low-dimensional regime $d=O(\log n)$, but the high-dimensional regime $d\gg \log n$ has remained largely uncharted: prior matching guarantees require nearly perfect correlation $ρ=1-o(1)$, even for information-theoretic recovery. Our main result is a polynomial-time algorithm for exact recovery at constant correlation. The algorithm works by computing and comparing weighted counts of a specially chosen family of ``wide'' trees. So long as $d\ge \mathrm{polylog}(n)$, the algorithm succeeds with high probability for any $ρ^2>\sqrtα$, where $α\approx 0.338$ is Otter's tree-counting constant. We complement this algorithmic result with an improved information-theoretic guarantee, showing that exact recovery is possible when $ρ^2 \gtrsim \max\{\log n/d,\sqrt{\log n/n}\}$. We also carry out a low-degree advantage calculation, which suggests that the condition $ρ^2 > \sqrtα$ is necessary for any tree-counting algorithm.

Sample Complexities of Estimating Gumbel--Max Watermark Proportions with and without Reduction to Pivotal Statistics

Shuwen Chai, Qiaosen Wang

Watermarking promises statistical traceability of large language model (LLM) uses, but real documents rarely arrive as purely human-written or purely LLM-generated. This motivates a quantitative question beyond detection: what proportion of a document is generated from a pre-spec…

Open Problem: Is Interaction Necessary for Order-Optimal 1-bit Mean Estimation?

Ivan Lau, Jonathan Scarlett

We ask whether interaction is necessary for order-optimal 1-bit mean estimation over nonparametric finite-moment classes. Adaptive threshold-query protocols achieve the order-optimal 1-bit minimax rate, and the same rate is attainable with general 1-bit queries using only one ada…

Fundamental limits of distributed multiclass classification from simple binary decisions

We consider the problem of constructing a $K$-class classifier from the combination of $O(\log K)$ simple binary classifiers -- this is a natural paradigm to construct a sophisticated classifier in a distributed manner with each agent performing a relatively straightforward task.…

Spectral Concentration and Recovery in Sparse High-Dimensional Random Geometric Graphs

We study sparse threshold random geometric graphs generated by high-dimensional spherical or Gaussian latent vectors. Although each edge has marginal probability $p$, shared latent variables make the adjacency entries dependent. At the connectivity scale $np=Ω(\log n)$, the spher…

Function-Counting Theory for Low-Dimensional Data Structures

Konstantin Häberle, Helmut Bölcskei

The success of deep learning models in classification and regression is widely attributed to the low-dimensional structure that real-world data tend to exhibit, despite their high-dimensional representation. This work attempts to provide a mathematical framework for binary classi…
