Fundamentals of Optical Fiber Sensing Schemes Based on Coherent Optical Time Domain Reflectometry: Signal Under Dynamic Temperature Conditions

Roman Ermakov, Huwei Wang, Florian Azendorf, André Sandmann, Juan M. Marin, Francesco Da Ros, Darko Zibar

We present a theoretical, algorithmic, and experimental study of temperature sensing using $φ$-OTDR with coherent detection. A physics-based model is developed to relate the measured Rayleigh backscattered signal to temperature variations along the fiber, showing that the phase evolution encodes the cumulative temperature change between the interrogator and the sensing location, while the amplitude exhibits only local sensitivity. Based on this insight, we propose robust algorithms for temperature-event detection and temperature-profile reconstruction. Experimental results demonstrate reliable recovery of temperature-induced perturbations in standard single-mode fibers using coherently detected $φ$-OTDR.

Quantitative Benchmarking of a Split-Field PML FDTD Solver: Slit Diffraction, and Scattering from PEC and Dielectric Cylinders

Sabrina Saima, Tasin Intisar

This paper presents a two-dimensional TMz finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) solver based on Yee's scheme for modeling radiation from an infinitely long z-directed line current, with the open region truncated by a Berenger split-field perfectly matched layer (PML). After valida…

Optical spectroscopy underpins material characterization, chemical sensing, and astronomy, but conventional instruments face a rigid trade-off between footprint, spectral range, and resolution. We demonstrate a content-adaptive spectrometer that overcomes this by co-designing dis…

Cyclic-Prefix-Free OFDM With Tail-Reuse Reconstruction for Distributed Acoustic Sensing

Ziang Chen, Zhiyang Xue, Zhongxing Tian, Zeyu Feng, Dongdong Zou, Yi Cai, et al.

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) enables frequency-domain reconstruction of the distributed Rayleigh backscatter channel in coherent distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), but an explicitly transmitted cyclic prefix (CP) lengthens the probing period and reduces the…

Plenoptic imaging of particle interactions in scintillation detectors

Xiang Dai, Chi-Jui Ho, Kevin Tandi, Chang Lee, Alex Bocchieri, David Parra, et al.

Accurate 3D localization of radiation interactions in scintillation detectors is essential for nuclear and particle physics, safeguards, and medical imaging, but remains difficult in light-starved regimes with limited photon statistics. We present PRISM, a multifocal plenoptic im…
