Calibrated Hybrid CNN-Transformer for Retinal OCT Classification

Animesh Kumar

Deep models for retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) classification report high accuracy but rarely report whether their confidence can be trusted -- a gap that matters when a wrong-but-confident reading delays sight-saving treatment. We pair a hybrid convolutional-Transformer encoder with a gradient-boosting (XGBoost) classification head and a three-part clinical safety layer: confidence calibration, out-of-distribution (OOD) rejection, and per-prediction uncertainty flagging. On four-class OCT (84,495 scans) the model reaches 95.4% accuracy while cutting calibration error twelve-fold (expected calibration error, ECE = 0.0024), so the confidence it reports tracks its true accuracy. To our knowledge this is the first OCT classifier to validate all three safety mechanisms jointly, with public weights and reproducible multi-seed evaluation.

Do Diabetic Foot Ulcer Segmentation Models Generalize? A Cross-Dataset Benchmark of CNN and Transformer Architectures

Abderrahmane Benfatah

Deep learning models for diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) segmentation routinely report high accuracy, but they are almost always trained and tested on the same dataset, leaving their behaviour on data from a different clinical source largely unmeasured. We benchmark three representativ…

Vertical Fusion: Condensing Internal Representations for Robust ViT Classification

Francesco Di Salvo, Shyam Nandan Rai, Hamed Damirchi, Ignacio Meza De la Jara, Sebastian Doerrich, Marco Lents, et al.

Despite exposing rich intermediate representations, Vision Transformers (ViTs) are almost exclusively utilized as black-box feature extractors, where only the last layer is considered for downstream tasks. We challenge this convention by introducing the notion of recoverability:…

Cross-Modal Fusion of OCT and OCT angiography enface for Improved Diagnostics of Diabetic Retinopathy

Rashadul Hasan Badhon, Atalie Carina Thompson, Jennifer I. Lim, Theodore Leng, Minhaj Nur Alam

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision impairment worldwide, highlighting the need for accurate and accessible screening tools. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) provides high-resolution structural information of the retina, whereas OCT angiography (OCTA) offers…

A Task-Driven Evaluation of UAV Detection and Tracking under Synthetic Fog

Amir Pouladi, Vesal Ahsani, Haijun Li, Homayoun Najjaran, Afzal Suleman

Fog severely degrades the visibility of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in skydominant, long-range imagery, reducing the reliability of downstream detection and tracking. This paper presents a task-driven evaluation framework that links depth-aware synthetic fog generation,…

Analyzing Image Encoder Choices and Graph Homophily in GCN Frameworks for Breast Ultrasound Classification

Sabahattin Mert Daloglu, Ceren Coskun, Harvey Castro, Soner Hacihaliloglu, Ilker Hacihaliloglu

Breast ultrasound is widely used for screening, yet automated analysis remains challenging due to speckle noise, acquisition variability, and weak separation of benign and malignant cases in standard ultrasound imaging. Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have recently emerged as…
